If you use ActBlue to raise money, you can integrate that account with Action Network. This can be set up from your ActBlue account. Click here to learn more about how to set this up.
There are two versions of the integration built before February 2024. If you have an old set up, it will still work. The first integration is implemented by ActBlue only. ActBlue will subscribe donors to Action Network and record the donation date (no backdating) and donation amount.
The second integration:
- Automatically subscribe donors to your group's email list
- Subscribe donors who opt-in to mobile on ActBlue to your mobile list on Action Network
- Store donation date, donation amounts, and recurring status
- Store ActBlue's employer field as a custom field of your choosing in Action Network
- Store ActBlue's occupation field as a custom field of your choosing in Action Network
- Tag activists with ActBlue Express Lane enabled with a tag of your choosing
- Note if a transaction was the first recurring donation made or part of ongoing recurring donations in the Transaction report
- Update Activist Records to reflect any refunds that have been made in ActBlue
If you're still using the second version of the integration, in the ActBlue section, you'll see where you selected which existing custom fields and tags you're using to store ActBlue's employer, occupation, and Express Lane data. You'll see the credentials, as well as username, passwork, and webhook URL that were generated. You can read more about ActBlue Webhooks here.
If you have the second integration is set up, you can request that ActBlue send over existing data (backfill). We do not recommend doing this if you already have the first integration set up, as it will result in duplicate transactions. The backdate will:
- Subscribe any donors (including resubscribing activists who have previously unsubscribed)
- Send over donation history (transactions will be backdated)
- Send over employer and occupation data
- Send over express lane data
- Going forward, this data will be sent over to Action Network automatically when an activist makes a donation on ActBlue. However, if they disable express lane, the tag will not be removed.
With the second integration, we pass through a custom link encouraging donors to bump their recurring contribution. This is created by ActBlue for all recurring donors. This link will take people to a page where they can increase the amount of their recurring donation. The link is only stored once a recurring donation goes through for that activist.
Three custom fields are created for all partners that have an ActBlue sync set up:
- Bump your recurring link: actblue_bump_recurring_link
- Recurring upsell seen (true/false): actblue_bump_recurring_seen
- The page was viewed by the donor
- Recurring upsell accepted (true/false): actblue_bump_recurring_accepted
- The upsell was accepted by the donor
We recommend targeting recurring donors and use the field values from the above clips to output a link in an email where donors can update their recurring contribution amount.
