On Action Network, you can allow people to check in to events. This is useful if you want to track actual attendance. You will not be able to mark attendance yourself, but activists can check in on their own.
This feature is only available to partners who are part of Boost. Click here to learn more and join Boost.
Enabling Self Check In
To enable event check in, go to the Responses tab of the Action Manage page for your event. Under the Self Check In section, tick the option to allow attendees to check in.
The check in window opens 24 hours before your event begins. It closes at the event's end time, or at the end of the event date if no end time is set.
During the check in window, activists who have already RSVPed will be automatically marked as Attended when they visit the event page. They will see a check in thank you page and receive the check in automatic email or mobile message if you have one active.
Activists who have not RSVPed will be given the option to RSVP without checking in or RSVP and check in at the same time. Checking in will also create an RSVP for the activist.
If you are using Text to Take Action, activists who text your event's mobile keyword during the check in window will also be checked in. Activists who have not already RSVPed will be RSVPed and checked in.
Requiring a direct check in link
You can optionally require that attendees check in using a direct link.
When this option is enabled, activists will not be checked in by visiting the regular event page. They must visit the direct check in link during the check in window.
This setting does not affect Text to Take Action. Activists who text the event's keyword will still be checked in.
Use the button in the Self Check In section to copy the direct check in link. You can also use a QR code generator to turn the link into a QR code that can be printed and displayed at your event.
If you are no longer accepting check ins, you can set up a redirect link in the Redirect Links section below Self Check In.
Click Save to view additional customization options.
Customizing the check in automatic response
After saving, return to the Responses tab. Under Automatic Emails & Mobile Messages, you will see an option to edit the Check In automatic response.
You can turn the automatic email and mobile message on or off and customize the language activists receive after checking in.
Viewing check in status and targeting by check in
After you enable Self Check In, you will see a new Status column in the RSVPs tab under Latest 100 Activists.
Activists who have checked in are marked as Attended. Activists who have RSVPed but have not checked in are marked as RSVPed.
On the activist's record, you will see Attended next to the event if they checked in.
To target an email, report, or mobile message by check in status, go to the Actions, Uploads, and Fundraising section of your targeting options. In the Actions drop down menu, search for the action and select the event with [checked in] next to it. This will target only people who checked in.
Using Self Check In with Event Campaigns
Event Campaigns include additional Self Check In options.
Campaign wide check in keyword
On the Event Campaign's Action Manage page, you can set up a campaign wide Self Check In keyword.
When an activist texts the keyword, Action Network looks for events in the campaign that the activist has RSVPed to, are currently within the check in window, and have Self Check In enabled.
If a matching event is found, the activist will be checked in. If no matching event is found, the activist will receive a not found message.
You can turn the reply for this keyword on or off and customize its language on the Event Campaign's manage page under the response options.
Default settings for host created events
When creating or editing an Event Campaign, you can choose whether Self Check In is enabled by default for events created by hosts.
You can also customize a default check in reply that will be applied to individual events in the campaign.
The default reply for host created events is separate from the reply used by the campaign wide keyword. Each reply can be turned on or off and customized separately.
